The Grand Paradis or Gran Paradiso in Italian was 1st climbed in 1860 by John Jermyn Cowell, W. Dundas and their French guides from Chamonix Michel-Ambroise Payot et Jean Tairraz.

It is a very popular 4000m peak, the only one entirely in Italy and known to be one of the easiest 4000m peak of the Alps. Technically easy yes, but a 4000m peak should never be under estimated. Its smooth approach, nice mountain huts make its ascent a perfect first experience of mountaineering.

The Gran Paradiso national park was the 1st one ever created in 1856 to protect mountain goats, the “bouquetins”. If you’re lucky you might see a couple before reaching the glacier in the early light of the day.

We offers 2 options.

  • Option 1: a 2 day ascent/climb from Chamonix.
  • Option 2: a 3 days program, with a 1 day glacier hike to Col d’Entreves to acclimatize yourself before reaching the summit of Grand Paradiso.
Option 1:

Day 1:
We’ll meet and start from Chamonix after checking our equipment. It takes about 1,5hr by car to reach Valsavarenche, a wonderful valley in the Grand Paradiso national park. A 2 hr hike will take us to Chabod hut at 2710m. We’ll sleep there after a good Italian diner.

Day 2:
Breakfast at 4am to start our Grand Paradis ascent. The first part is a quite steep and rocky trail and then we’ll hike on a glacier almost to the top. The final part is an easy rocky ridge with a stunning view. It takes about 4/5hr from the hut to reach the virgin statue at the summit. We’ll then go down either by the same route or depending on timing by the Victor Emmanuel hut, which offers a different route down the same valley. We’ll drive back to Chamonix.
